Fundraising and Volunteering
Programs and activities sponsored by the Rio Americano PTSA are made possible through financial contributions made by families, staff, and community supporters. Below are just a few of the ways the Rio Americano PTSA raises money to support the various programs, activities and scholarships for the students and families at Rio Americano High School. Parents are encouraged and welcomed to help plan these fundraisers and events. Watch for information in our PTSA Newsflash which comes out weekly!
We begin each year with our Membership Drive and Direct Donation Campaign (though donations are accepted all year long). This is an easy way to jump-start our efforts and provide cash flow for the first of the school year activities and programs. Donations are tax deductible. Your donation is very much appreciated!! You are also encouraged to join or have your senior join so they will be eligible to apply for one of 8 senior scholarships, offered in March.
In the fall PTSA hosts our annual community Wreath Sale. Purchase beautiful nursery grown centerpieces, wreathes, and more to brighten your home or as gifts for family and friends or your staff.
Scholarships
Seniors: Going to college or vocational school in the fall? Want an extra $500? The Rio PTSA is awarding 8 Rio seniors with $500 scholarships. Rio Athletics Information
Over the past fifty years, Rio Americano’s athletic program has consistently been one of the best in the Sacramento region, winning Section championships (at least one in each of the past 20 years) and countless League championships, while sending hundreds of students off to collegiate athletic programs. Most importantly, Rio student-athletes have learned life lessons and developed character traits that have helped them succeed in their careers and life. More often than not, Rio alumni point back to their time playing for Rio Americano as some of the most memorable and influential moments of their high school experience.
Rio Americano offers approximately 50 teams in 22 unique sports, with over 80 coaches. With such breadth and depth of athletic opportunities comes a significant cost. Equipment, uniforms, coaches’ stipends, entry fees, officials’ fees, and facility care and improvements are just some of the expenses that have to be met each year. Conservatively, the Rio Athletics program requires about $500 per athlete per season to cover costs.
Where Does Rio Athletics Funding Come From?
- San Juan USD - $100,000 (used mainly for coach stipends) plus facilities and insurance
- Student Body Funds (Gate fees, SB cards) - $75,000 (used to pay for CIF and League dues plus officials’ costs)
- Rio Americano Athletic Boosters - $75,000 (used to cover coach stipends beyond the basic District allotment; could be used for additional expenses)
- Sport-specific Fundraising - $75,000 (used to cover most uniforms, tournament/meet entry fees, and replacement equipment such as balls, stopwatches, etc)
Total Athletics Budget = approximately $325,000
The Rio Americano Athletic Boosters is the organization that supports ALL of Rio Americano’s sports teams and serves as the umbrella entity under which sport specific fundraising can legally take place. We need to work together to develop a strategic plan that allows us to maintain and support the existing Rio Athletics program while working towards investments that will make the sports experience at Rio second to none.
We are fortunate to have supportive administrators. Principal Cliff Kelly and Athletic Director Bill Taylor are sports enthusiasts and dedicated to improving the sports environment here at Rio.

Rio Americano Science Boosters
Who are we? Rio Americano Science Boosters (RASB) is an organization of parents, families, and teachers who support science education at Rio Americano High School by raising money from the Rio community.
How are donations used? Donations are used ONLY for science-related expenses that support student learning. Typical purchases include: dissection materials, chemicals, batteries, bulbs, glassware, microscopes, software, and other durables necessary in today’s science laboratories. RASB funds also support Rio’s Science Bowl and Science Olympiad programs. We also award academic scholarships to select Rio seniors who demonstrate a passion and commitment to pursue a career in science.
What donation amount is requested? This year we are estimating a district funding shortfall of $78 per student for science classes. Therefore, we are asking all families with students enrolled in science to donate $78 per student to the Rio Americano Science Boosters. And if you can give more that would be great! Of course, we understand that not everyone can afford $78 for science education so any amount you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.
How can I donate? – Click HERE to donate. Or just scan the QR Code below with your phone. Or you can make checks payable to Rio Americano Science Boosters and submit them to department chair Phillip Montbriand in room D13. The tax ID for Rio Americano Science Boosters is: 68-0346226, and all donations are tax deductible.
How can I become more involved with Science Boosters? We welcome parent and student participation in monthly meetings. Please contact Mr. Montbriand (pmontbriand@sanjuan.edu) for information re: upcoming dates and times. In addition, our outreach goal is to provide information to students about careers in science. If you would like to help put on speaker events, or become a speaker, we would love to hear from you.
